Jagjit Singh was born on 8 February 1941 in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. He had a passion for music since his childhood and learned to play various instruments, such as the harmonium, sitar and tabla. He also developed an interest in ghazal and was influenced by the likes of Mirza Ghalib, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Sahir Ludhianvi. He moved to Mumbai in 1965 to pursue a career in music and met his future wife and musical partner, Chitra Singh. They married in 1969 and formed a successful duo that revolutionized the ghazal genre. They recorded several albums and performed live concerts across the world. They also sang for many Bollywood films and collaborated with other artists.
Jagjit Singh faced a personal tragedy in 1990 when his son Vivek died in a car accident. He was deeply affected by this loss and his music became more somber and introspective. He also reduced his public appearances and focused more on his solo projects. He continued to compose and sing till his last days, despite suffering from various health issues. He died on 10 October 2011 due to a brain hemorrhage. He was mourned by millions of fans and received tributes from many eminent personalities. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honor, posthumously in 2012.
