Monografi Ekstrak Tumbuhan Obat Indonesia: A Guide to Indonesian Herbal Extracts
Indonesia is a country rich in biodiversity, especially in medicinal plants. The use of herbal extracts for health and wellness has a long history and tradition in Indonesia. However, there is a need for standardization and quality control of these products to ensure their safety and efficacy.
That is why the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (Badan POM RI) published the Monografi Ekstrak Tumbuhan Obat Indonesia (METOI), a series of books that provide scientific information and specifications for various herbal extracts. The METOI covers aspects such as botanical description, chemical constituents, pharmacological effects, dosage forms, analytical methods, stability tests, and safety data of each extract.
The METOI aims to serve as a reference for researchers, manufacturers, regulators, practitioners, and consumers of herbal extracts. It also contributes to the development and promotion of Indonesian herbal medicine as part of the national health system. The METOI consists of six volumes, each containing 25 monographs of different herbal extracts. The first volume was published in 2010[^1^], and the latest volume was published in 2019[^2^].
The METOI is available in PDF format for download from the Badan POM RI website[^3^]. However, the PDF files are not searchable and may have some formatting issues. Therefore, some users may prefer to access the METOI online through other platforms such as Xiaomi Community[^4^], where they can also interact with other users and share their experiences and opinions about herbal extracts. Some examples of herbal extracts that are included in the METOI are:
Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb. (Temulawak), a rhizome extract that has anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. It is used for various liver disorders, dyspepsia, rheumatism, and diabetes.
Andrographis paniculata (Burm.f.) Nees (Sambiloto), a leaf extract that has antibacterial, antiviral, antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulant effects. It is used for respiratory infections, fever, sore throat, diarrhea, and diabetes.
Centella asiatica (L.) Urb. (Pegagan), a whole plant extract that has wound healing, neuroprotective, cognitive enhancing, anti-ulcer, and antioxidant effects. It is used for skin problems, nervous disorders, gastric ulcers, and memory impairment.
Morinda citrifolia L. (Mengkudu), a fruit extract that has anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. It is used for cancer prevention and treatment, diabetes mellitus, obesity, arthritis, and immune system enhancement.
Piper retrofractum Vahl. (Cabai Jawa), a fruit extract that has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and appetite stimulating effects. It is used for pain relief, fever reduction, digestive disorders, and weight gain.
The METOI provides detailed information on the preparation methods, quality parameters, pharmacological activities, clinical trials, adverse effects, contraindications, interactions, and dosage recommendations of each herbal extract. The METOI also includes references to scientific publications and patents related to the herbal extracts. The METOI is a valuable resource for anyone who is interested in learning more about the potential benefits and risks of using herbal extracts from Indonesia. 061ffe29dd
